Wednesday 8 April 2015, 17.30 – 19.00 Room 802, 20 Bedford Way, UCL Institute of Education, London

Investment for education in emergencies: a review of the evidence’ – Susan Nicolai (Overseas Development Institute)

This talk will discuss the findings of a rigorous literature review that was carried out to answer key questions around four key areas concerning education in emergencies (EiE):

  • Is education seen as a ‘high priority’ amongst emergency affected populations?
  • To what extent is schooling disrupted by different types of emergencies? And how are different groups diversely affected?
  • What are the economic and human costs of emergencies on education? And what are the returns to investment in EiE?
  • What is the nature of funding for EiE?

The review also indicates what future research is needed to better understand how to improve education in emergencies.
